…we thought we’d pin down a vegetarian for some expert thoughts on sustaining a meat-free diet in the Cotswolds. We went one better and found a vegan: the lovely Katrina Eastgate, 25, who lives in Ilmington with her vegetarian dad Gareth and dairy-free mum Jane. “I reckon there are lots of secret vegans and vegetarians in the village,” says Katrina, who is allergic to dairy and eggs and gave up meat in 2017. Her dad swiftly followed suit. “We are big fans of Ilmington Shop,” says Katrina. “So much thought has gone into sourcing good quality products that aren’t obscenely expensive. During this year it’s been really good having a community shop in our village. There are unique items you can’t find at Aldi.” One of Katrina’s favourite plant-based products is Clive’s Pies, a range of organic, vegan pies and tarts made in Dartmouth, Devon and stocked in our freezer. “When I was growing up, vegan and vegetarian food was very bland,” says Katrina. “So it’s great to have new options. Clive’s Pies come in great varieties: spicy, creamy or hearty autumn flavours. It’s a bit more adventurous than the standard vegetarian fare.” Linda McCartney pies are also high on the Eastgate shopping list. While mum Jane puts in a regular Suma order at the shop for pulses, tofu and vegan sandwich spreads, dad Gareth has got into the shopping during lockdown. “Mum’s the brains of the operation!” says Katrina, “but Dad’s really found his feet shopping this last year. I shop here too: I really appreciate the cruelty-free items, like the Faith In Nature shampoos. My hair struggled to switch at first, but now it’s much healthier.” Think of us as your local health food shop, whether you are vegetarian, vegan or simply searching for ethical options. Our organic Suma order goes in this morning and every second Friday morning: to place your order, email orders@ilmingtonshop.co.uk or call 01608 682838
