As the cost of living crisis starts to bite, we are all looking at ways to stretch the grocery budget.

06.19.2022 by Admin //

One solution is to “shop local” and reduce your petrol costs! Don’t forget we stock a wide range of value goods in Ilmington Community Shop. But once we get our food home, how do we make sure nothing goes to waste? Food scientists are reminding consumers that keeping groceries fresh means they go further. They say bread will go stale six times more quickly if left in the fridge, so keep it in a cupboard or bread bin. Eggs are the other way around. Like most food shops, we sell ours at an ambient temperature, but eggs are better chilled in your fridge at home. We’ve got a lovely new chiller to store the local fruit and veg that are delivered fresh to us every day, and all fruit and veg should be stored in the bottom of your fridge too (3 to 5 degrees Celsius.) But some fruits – strawberries and tomatoes for instance – taste much better if they are brought to room temperature before eating. The Greeks never chill their tomatoes at all! Shop fresh, shop local and make the most of your shopping basket
