…with his sausages and bacon – he likes to place them personally in the chiller at Ilmington Community Shop. Carl is the one man band behind The Cotswold Sausage & Bacon Company, based at Talton Mill in Newbold, three miles away. “It’s just me,” the 29-year-old says simply, “I supply a few community shops, post offices, the little shops you know?” Farm and community shops have sustained Carl during the pandemic while the hotel and restaurant kitchens have been closed. He learnt his trade locally. “I worked for a lady for 10 years. She eventually closed her business and I decided to go it alone. The Cotswold Gold sausages are my breadwinner. It’s a high pork content, no rubbish, staple sausage. I use fresh farmed English pork shoulder – they’re very popular.” Carl’s doing so well he’s employing a new part-timer. We hope he’ll still have the time to come and say hello – and help us stack our shelves!
