Sarj and David, two kitchen-confident chaps, have joined the bevy of bakers who regularly make cakes for the Community Café. Homemade cakes are our USP and we hugely appreciate all the volunteer bakers who apply themselves on a weekly or monthly basis. “I like cooking,” says Alan Sarjant, holding up his Sfouf, a Moroccan polenta cake. “Cakes aren’t generally my thing, but this is my favourite cake from a lovely little coffee shop in Dartmouth. I tried it and it came out well, so I now I’m on Sheila’s rota!” Sheila Lowe manages all the cake bakers, including David Spragg, who makes Bara Brith, a Welsh-style fruit loaf infused with tea. We serve it with butter and it’s an established classic in the Café. “We always welcome boy bakers and we’d love to have more!” says Sheila.
