Farmer Rob is most usually to be seen in the fields around Ilmington, tending sheep, mowing the village greens and tackling multiple odd jobs. But twice a week he is on a critical mission: a trip to Ilmington Community Shop with a grandchild or two in tow. There’s Delilah and Darcy, Arlo and Dodi the baby. The toddlers’ favourite ritual is coming into the shop with Pops to buy sweeties or an ice cream. “Carol and I look after the grandchildren on a Tuesday and a Thursday,” says Rob. “I like to walk up to the shop in the afternoon with whoever we’ve got, to give Carol a rest. The children like Michele. She says ‘Oh no, not you lot again!’” Cornetto is their all-time favourite. “They like the cones.” Sporting his statement T shirt, Rob gives the impression that being Pops is the most rewarding job of them all
