…One on a mission to help out and another on a mission to see the Queen. Angy Okland, on the left, is 76 and she lives in Atlanta, Georgia, a mere 4,000 miles away. “I fly over twice a year because my son is a Delta pilot,” says Angy, “but this time I’ve really come for the Queen. Yes, I’ve flown all the way from America to sleep on the streets of London!” Both sisters remember watching the Coronation on TV when they were six and seven years old and on hearing the recent news, Angy decided to come and see her Majesty lying in state. But first she was serving coffee and flapjack in Ilmington. Big sister Lindsay Martin, 77, was not planning to stand in the world’s longest queue. She drives far enough (35 miles from Hartpury near Gloucester) to help in our Community Café. “I lived in Ilmington for 10 years, helping to run the B&B,” says Lindsay, “and in 2018 I moved to be near family. But I help out here every other Saturday because I know how desperate you are for volunteers. It’s such a pleasure!” Ladies we celebrate your energy and enthusiasm – and the pleasure is all ours…
Ilmington Community Café reopens this morning following a week’s closure. As always, we will be offering hot drinks, homemade cake and a welcome smile
