Before he knew it, he’d agreed to come and meet his readers in our community café. “I’ve never done a book club before,” admitted Richard, who lives in Moreton-in-Marsh. “It’s lovely to have a great big book club like this!” Richard is a self-published writer who doesn’t shy away from controversy. His first novel expanded on an episode in Hitler’s childhood and now he’s written In the Shadow of Shakespeare, a dramatic mystery that questions the authorship of Shakespeare’s poems and plays. “I love a conspiracy theory!” says Richard. “There is a mystery that so little is known about the Stratford businessman Will Shaxpur. I tried to find a reasonable explanation for it.” A lively discussion ensued over cake and tea, which is the way we like it. Richard also picked our next book choice out of the hat (from a list of our own suggestions) and we will be reading Rose Tremain’s Restoration novel Merivel over the month. Please join us for the next meeting at 2pm on Tuesday 6th June in Ilmington Community Café! You’ll find Book Club @thecafe here on the first Tuesday of every month: we welcome all-comers, even if you haven’t read the book. And if you fancy catching up on a literary whodunnit set on the streets of Stratford, we now have signed copies of Richard’s novel on sale in the shop
